Homemade Butter Recipe with step by step photos and easy to follow instructions:
Homemade Butter – making butter at home is much easier than you think. In a matter of minutes, you can have freshly made great tasting butter in your kitchen. It is great to put on a toast, muffins, Roti or Parathas.
The question that may be crawling through your mind now is “why should I bother to make butter at home?” and the answer is “It’s fun! It is easy and it will make you feel so proud of yourself!” It is so easy and great way to make use of any leftover cream that stares at you when you open the fridge and you are not sure what to do with it.
What kind of cream to choose for making butter? Any full fat cream will do it but be sure to use the quality cream for making Homemade Butter. The more fat there is in the cream, the better the butter will be. I buy homogenized (organic if I can find it) cream with 35% fat content from our local supermarket and it works beautifully.
When making the Homemade Butter, I recommend using the cream at room temperature. I have experienced that the room temperature cream churns better than the cold cream. However, once the cream has churned, use cold water to gather the butter into a lump. Using warm water will melt the butter and it will not gather into a ball.
Homemade Butter will keep well in the fridge for up to 4 weeks. You can also freeze this butter for several months. Don’t throw away the buttermilk. You can use this to make a dough or smoothies. I use the buttermilk to make Roti dough.
Let’s learn how to make some delicious Homemade Butter!
How to make Homemade Butter:
- In a blender (you can use a food processor or an immersion blender), add room temperature cream and blend it until cream thickens.
- Add cold water and blend again. The cold water will help the butter separate from the buttermilk and butter will gather into a lump.
- Place a sieve over a clean bowl. Line the sieve with a cheesecloth. Remove the butter and buttermilk from the blender into the sieve and let the buttermilk drain into a bowl.
- Once the buttermilk has stopped draining, remove the bowl from underneath the sieve and move the sieve into the kitchen sink. Gently let the cold water run over the butter to wash the butter. With a clean fork, gently open the butter lump while the water is still running over the butter to wash away as much buttermilk as possible. This is called “washing the butter”. It is important to do this step to keep the butter fresh longer.
- Gather the cheesecloth from all corners and very gently squeeze out the moisture. Transfer the butter to a container.
- Add salt if desired. Cover it and store in the refrigerator. The butter will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 4 weeks.
- Enjoy the freshly homemade butter and share your experience with others.
